>> May 15th - The Bishop Carter Golden Gator Girls Soccer Invitational Soccer Tournament was hosted over the May 4th weekend. Congratulations to Lockerby who were the Tournament Champions and Confederation who were the Consolation Champions.

Here's a brief summary of results during the event:

>> May 8th - The Lo-Ellen Park SS Knights continued their winning ways in track circles on Saturday, leading the pack of schools participating at the Laurentian-hosted Black Fly Relays by 80 points in the overall aggregate point standings. Manitoulin, St Joe-Scollard Hall of North Bay and Marymount Academy rounded out the top four.

>> May 2nd - It was another successful year in SDSSAA/NOSSA girls gymnastics, as can be evidenced by the number of medal performances at the OFSAA championship hosted this Monday and Tuesday in Stratford. Here's a quick preview:

>> Apr 30th - The SDSSAA Junior Football schedule has been hammered out and will kick-off Tuesday, May 8th. Nine teams have committed to the league this Spring, which will consist of a series of three-team mini-round robin games, culminating to a championship jamboree to take place at Lasalle SS on Tuesday, June 5th.

>> Apr 24th - SDSSAA athletes participating at NOSSA badminton hosted at White Pines in the Soo last Friday and Saturday managed a pair of first place finishes, qualifying them for the OFSAA championship May 3-5 in Stratford.

Gold medallists were:
Midget boys' singles - Alexandre Rheault (Notre-Dame)
Senior boys' doubles - Hans Agnihotri and Will Agnihotri (St Benedict)

>> Apr 16th - The SDSSAA/NOSSA Girls Gymnastics championships were hosted at the Sudbury GymZone Gymnastics Club on Gemmell street this past Friday, with the Collège Notre-Dame Alouettes maintaining their stranglehold on the overall aggregate banner, recording their 17th consecutive team title at this event. Some 60 qualifiers from the 120-strong local competition will advance to OFSAA Gymnastics Championship starting April 30th in Barrie.

>> Apr 14th - The Lockerby Composite Vikings hauled in their fourth consecutive overall aggregate title at the SDSSAA badminton championships that were hosted this past Saturday at St Charles College.

The Vikes finished with a total of 44 points, thirteen better than their closest competitor, Es du Sacé-Coeur who collected the overall aggregate banner for "A" schools.

>> Apr 10th - The SDSSAA Spring Sport schedule officially kicks off on Thursday with badminton preliminaries taking place at Lasalle, Macdonald Cartier and St Charles College (10:30am start). Top qualifiers will advance to the finals, taking place at St Charles on Saturday (9am start).

Hot on the heels of badminton, SDSSAA soccer kicks off on Monday, April 16th with a series of games at one location, James Jerome north field, until Thursday, April 19th. The five week season culminates with quarters, semis and finals on May 24th, 28th and 29th respectively. James Jerome will also play host to two NOSSA soccer championships that Sudbury will host on Friday, June 1st, those being boys "AA", girls "A" and "AAA".

The junior gridiron schedule gets underway on Tuesday, May 8th and continues with each successive Tuesday until the championship finals tournament on Tuesday, June 5th. Teams and sites will be added in the not-too-distant future.

SDSSAA tennis (May 15, 16 and 17), girls slo-pitch (May 22 and 26), SDSSAA track and field (May 23, 24) and boys slo-pitch (Jun 6) are also featured in the spring sport line-up, accessible by clicking here, or via the Association Info pull down menu located above (note: spring sports begin on page 25).


>> Apr 2nd - The Sudbury High School Badminton Invitational Tournament was hosted this past weekend at Lively and St Benedict, with a total of 170 student-athletes representing some 24 high schools across the NOSSA district participating.

>> Mar 8 - Competing at the OFSAA Swim Championships in Etobicoke Monday to Wednesday this week, Lockerby's James Clendenning captured a silver medal in the 50m free event. This, despite battling a nasty case of stomach flu, represented James' second OFSAA silver medal this year.

>> Mar 8 - UPDATE! The Vikes lose a 3 set nail biter to Jacob-Hespeler in the quarter final round, dashing hopes of an OFSAA medal.

Mar 7 - The Lockerby Composite senior girls volleyball team is making quite a splash at OFSAA Girls AAA Volleyball going on now in Kitchener-Waterloo. The Vikes finished in a 3-1 three way tie in their pool during the round robin, but emerged as the top seed by virtue of a tie breaker calculation. The Vikings face Central Ontario rep Jacob-Hespeler in quarter final action today and if they win, they'll play again at 3:30pm in the semi final round. Gold medal game goes tonight at 7pm.

>> Feb 17th - A total of 24 local grapplers have qualified for OFSAA Wrestling 2012 by virtue of their performance at NOSSA hosted yesterday in Sault Ste. Marie. Lo-Ellen Park collected the girls aggregate team banner.

>> Feb 15th - SDSSAA racers participating at the NOSSA Alpine Ski Championships hosted in North Bay today swooshed away with a pile of the team and individual titles up for grabs. Marymount girls and St Benedict won Level I team titles, while Lockerby managed the Level II boys title.

>> Feb 14th - The NOSSA Nordic Ski Championships were hosted Tuesday at the Naughton Trails, with some 90 racers representing a dozen Northern Ontario high schools competing. Lively DSS senior boys team won top honours while Lo-Ellen Park SS captured top senior girls honours.

Feb 8th - The SDSSAA Nordic Ski Championships were hosted Wednesday at the Naughton Trails, with 34 racers representing six area high schools participating. All racers now qualify for NOSSA, which will be hosted Tuesday, February 14th, also at the Naughton site.

>> Feb 8th - UPDATE! Lockerby Composite was the big winner at SDSSAA Alpine Ski earlier today, winning the overall combined Level I and Level II boys and girls team titles. Marymount hauled in the Level I girls team title and St Benedict won the Level I boys team title. Selected racers qualify to participate at NOSSA hosted on Feb 15th in North Bay.

Feb 7th - UPDATE! A start list in support of the SDSSAA Alpine Ski Championships, slated for Wed, Feb 8, at Adanac, is released. Some 114 racers representing 12 area high schools are expected to participate.

Feb 2nd - UPDATE! SDSSAA racers hit the slopes for the first competitive test of the 2012 alpine season with a prelimary race hosted earlier today at Adanac Ski Hill. First place finishers were: Girls Level II - Lauren Kyle (St Benedict), Girls Level I - Mackenzie Webber (Marymount) and Boys Level I - Liam Passi (Lasalle). City championships go Wed, Feb 8th, also at Adanac.

Feb 1st - A start list in support of the SDSSAA Alpine Ski Preliminaries, slated for Thursday, February 2nd, 3:30pm at Adanac, is released. A total of 83 racers representing nine different area high schools are expected to participate.

>> Jan 19 - SDSSAA rules require all scheduled games to be postponed and rescheduled whenever school buses are pulled off the road due to winter weather.

As a result, all SDSSAA-scheduled basketball, hockey, nordic ski and volleyball games scheduled for later today will be postponed and rescheduled in the near future.


>> Jan 16 - The first nordic ski preliminary meet was hosted this past Thursday at the Windy Lake nordic ski trails. Preliminary #2 is slated for Thu, Jan 19th, also at the Windy Lake site.

>> Jan 12 - A schedule is released in support of the 2nd annual Lo-Ellen Park Knights Invitational Hockey Tournament, slated for February 2nd and 3rd at the McClelland and Tom Davies Arenas. >> Dec 15 - UPDATE! Make that 18 in a row for the Lockerby Vikings, capturing the overall aggregate title at SDSSAA Swim yesterday. The Vikings outdistanced their closest competitor by over two hundred points en route to a 524 point championship. St Benedict captured the boys "A" banner with 49 points, while Marymount hauled in the girls "A" banner with 77.5 points.

Individual aggregate winners were as follows:

  • Midget Girls - Grace Clendenning - Lockerby (2 wins/ 1 second place)
  • Midget Boys - Aiden Spoel - Lo-Ellen (1 win/ 1 2nd place)

The SDSSAA Swim Championships were hosted today at Laurentian University with an estimated 200 student-athletes representing some 16 area high schools participating. The Lockerby Vikings will be seeking their 18th consecutive overall aggregate title at this event.

>> Dec 6 - SDSSAA Senior Football honoured the top performers of the 2011 season at its 8th annual banquet hosted at the Caruso Club last Wednesday. A total of 53 all-star awards were doled out along with a total of five major award winners including top offensive, defensive, most valuable, most outstanding player and best lineman. Long time official Chris Peters was also presented with a special league "Builder's Award" for his many years of service and support of local football.

>> Dec 6 - The St Charles College Cardinal seniors and Lo-Ellen Park Knight juniors emerged the victors from this weekend's 10th annual Lady Lancer Volleyball Tournament hosted at the New Sudbury school. The event sets the tone for the 2011-2012 girls season, with all indicators pointing towards an unpredictable champion.

>> Dec 5 - The St Charles Cardinals emerged victorious at the Nipissing District Invitational Boys Hockey Tournament hosted this past weekend in North Bay. The Cards defeated Algonquin of North Bay (6-1), Superior Heights of the Soo (8-1) and tied St Mary's of the Soo (3-3) to advance first in their pool. They then defeated Scollard Hall of North Bay 4-2, Franco-Cite of North Bay 4-1 and St Mary's again 3-2 in the quarters, semis and finals respectively.

>> UPDATE! Make that three ... The Lo-Ellen Park Knights advanced to the OFSAA "AA" Boys Volleyball event hosted in Stratford by defeating the Chippewa Raiders in a three set final thriller (25-27, 25-18, 15-11). For the Knights, it was their first NOSSA title since 2008 when they claimed the "AAA" NOSSA banner.

Nov 20 - At least two SDSSAA teams will be making the highly coveted trip to OFSAA next weekend, having successfully captured NOSSA championships this past Friday and Saturday.

In basketball, the Sacré-Coeur Griffons will be making their third consecutive OFSAA "A" Basketball appearance, having dispatched the Central Algoma Huskies in the Championship Final 38-30. In volleyball, the Lockerby Vikings will be making a second straight appearance at OFSAA "AAA" Volleyball, defeating their nemisis Widdifield of North Bay three games to nil.

>> Nov 20 - Two SDSSAA teams found themselves on the cusp of a Lively DSS Invitational Hockey Tournament title this Sunday, as both Lasalle Lancers and St Charles Cardinals reached the semi final round. The Lancers dropped their semi final game to Franco-Cité of Sturgeon Falls, while the Cards prevailed in their semi against Central Algoma. The Cards went on to drop a 3-2 decision to Franco in the Championship Final.

>> Oct 29 - The St Benedict Bears are the 2011 SDSSAA senior boys football champions, doubling the Notre-Dame Alouettes 54-27 in the championship final contested earlier this evening at the James Jerome Sports Complex. Wide receiver Matthew Vettoretti was named the star of the game for the Bears, who now advance to the NOSSA semi final vs St Joseph/Scollard Hall Bears. The North Bay Bears defeated West Ferris 33-10 in the NDA final that was contested earlier today as wel. >> Oct 25 - The Lo-Ellen Park Knights are the new SDSSAA junior boys soccer champions, nipping the St Benedict Bears in a battle of south end schools yesterday afternoon at James Jerome field. For the Knights, the title represents their first since 2006.

>> Oct 19 - A total of 17 schools have signed up to participate in SDSSAA girls hockey this season, with the exhibition season kicking off Monday, October 24th. The league will feature an "East/West" Tournament on Fri, Oct 28, at which a series of mini games will be scheduled and scores accumulate to determine an overall winner.

>> Oct 19 - Results from yesterday's cross country running championship are now in the books, with Lockerby managing a sound 10 point victory in the overall aggregate point standings. The Vikings finished the day with a total of 28 points with Lo-Ellen finishing second with 18. In the "A" overall aggregate, Confederation finished with 16 points followed by Marymount with 10 points.

>> Oct 18 - AND THEY'RE OFF! The midget girls fly off the line to signal the start of the SDSSAA Cross Country Running Championship hosted at Laurentian today. Races continue throughout the day with the senior boys slated for the final start of the day at 1:30pm. Results will be uploaded as soon as they are released.

>> Oct 13 - UPDATE! Lockerby posted three out of four age group titles en route to an overall cross country relay championship on the Laurentian trails October 13th. The Vikings won both the junior and senior girls age groups, as well as junior boys, while St Benedict collected top honours in senior boys competition.

>> Oct 7 - A first crack at results from yesterday's fourth and final cross country preliminary race of the season has been developed. Updates will be posted as they become available. Next on the schedule is the relay championships next Thursday, October 13th on the Laurentian trails.

>> Oct 4 - Senior boys hockey coaches have grinded out a pre-season schedule that comes into affect Wednesday, October 12th. A total of thirteen teams have committed to participate in the league, eleven of which will participate in the 18-game exhibition schedule.

>> UPDATE! Sep 29 - The St Charles four-some of Ryan Lafreniere, Stephen Gonko, Joel Charlebois and Evan Purcell captured top honours in boys team competition at the NOSSA Golf Championship hosted at Stoneridge Golf Course in Elliot Lake. The Cards finished tied with Es Franco-Cité of Sturgeon Falls with a combined score of 316, but prevailed in a playoff. Other locals Lockerby finished third with 320 points, Lasalle fourth with 325 points and Notre-Dame tenth with 367 points. Notre-Dame's Emilie O'Bonsawin was the top placing female golfer posting a 18-hole score of 109 good for fifth place in the field. The St Charles boys team, along with O'Bonsawin and Nick Petryna of Lockerby have all qualified for the OFSAA Golf Championship taking place after Thanksgiving with the boys' event Oct 11-13 in Belleville and the girls' Oct 13 in Ottawa.

Sep 22 - An unidentified student golfer prepares to "grip it and rip it" at the SDSSAA golf championships hosted at the Lively Golf and Country Club today. A total of 100 golfers representing 17 area high schools were participating in the one day event.

>> Sep 21 - Cross country preliminary race #2 was hosted yesterday at the Naughton Trails. A total of 159 student-athletes representing eleven area high schools participated. Next on the schedule is the LU XC Invitational, slated for Thu, Sep 29 at the Laurentian trails.

Haley Maziarski of Lo-Ellen Park finished first in the girls race while Brandon Belan of St Benedict finished atop the boys' field. The next preliminary is scheduled for Tuesday, September 20th at the Naughton Trails.
