I'm rubbing my hands together in anticipation of arguably the most active period that the high school sports scene in Sudbury has ever seen.

Wed-Sat, Mar. 22-25 O.F.S.A.A. Senior Boys' Hockey Championships - three sites
Organizers for the O.F.S.A.A. Nordic Ski Championships, led by Convener Mary Waddell, agreed by consensus at their meeting of Monday evening to host the event again in 2001, most likely on the week following the Scott Tournament of Hearts. This year's championship is expected to attract a total of 1,000 participants and coaches to Sudbury. This means that next year, Sudbury will play host to another two provincial high school championships, the second being Boys' AAA Basketball in March of 2001.
Still on Nordic Skiing, this Saturday racers from all across the Province will be making the trek to Sudbury for the Pre-O.F.S.A.A. meet, hosted for age groups ranging from tykes to seniors. The meet will be an important opportunity for student-athletes at the high school level to test the improvements made in the Laurentian trails and bear in mind those course-related nuances that will give them the edge competitively at the O.F.S.A.A. Championship. A grand opening ceremony of the new trails will take place at 10am, with several key dignitaries and special guests expected to be on hand.
Finally this week, don't forget to take in some first class Girls' Volleyball action this weekend at the Nickel Classic 2000. Games begin at 3pm tommorrow at Lo-Ellen, Lockerby, Northeastern, Confederation and Lasalle. Championship Finals are slated for 5:30pm on Saturday. Best of luck to all Sudbury entries!
