If you follow high school sports at all, you've probably already recognized that the S.D.S.S.A.A.'s various league games and championships form just a part, albeit a significant part, of the total high school sports picture in the Sudbury region.

As I report from time to time, schools often organize their own invitational events that attract school teams from all parts of the province. Events like the Roundball Classic earlier this month, the Lively Invitational Hockey Tournament in late November, and many others, seem to be gaining steam and are now widely recognized as highly sought after additions to schools' athletic team schedules.

Such is the case with the next two events.

We'll start with the Nickel Classic Girls' Volleyball Tournament, organized by Kathy LeBreton of Lasalle and Ed Millard of Lo-Ellen Park.

Originally known as the Lo-Ellen Park Invitational, the Nickel Classic will take place Friday, February 4th and Saturday, February 5th, and will feature a total of 48 teams, 24 Junior and 24 Senior, some twenty-five come from outside the Region. The tournament is designed to pit local entries against teams from outside the Region, thereby increasing the variety factor and subsequent enjoyment for all participants involved.

Games begin at 3:00pm Friday in five sites, including Lasalle, Lockerby, Lo-Ellen, Northeastern and Confederation, and will wrap up with the Championship Finals Saturday afternoon.

The 2000 Classic features its own web-site to keep teams and all other interested parties informed on tournament developments. Organizers hope to include game results and even pictures as the event progresses. You can view the site at: www3.sympatico.ca/edmill/edmill/, or you can click on the tournament name in the "Quick Links" section of the S.D.S.S.A.A. web page.

Fast forward just one week later, Doug MacKay of Lo-Ellen Park will be hosting his annual Golden Hoop Boys' Basketball Tournament, always a staple in the line-up of high school athletic events each year.

This year's boys' Golden Hoop will consist of 36 teams, 12 each in the Midget, Junior and Senior Divisions, and will be contested in six different sites, including Confederation, Northeastern, Lo-Ellen Park, St. Charles, Notre Dame and Lockerby. Of the 36 entries, 21 are from outside the Region of Sudbury.

Believe it or not, this is the 26th incredible year that the Golden Hoop will be hosted in Sudbury, taking its place as one of the longest running and most successful events of its kind in the Province.

Action tips off Friday afternoon, February 10th, in all six venues, continues throughout the day on Saturday, February 11th, and culminates with the Championship Finals at Lo-Ellen beginning at 5:30pm.

More details to come on the Golden Hoop event as the date draws nearer.

And on a closing note this week, the S.D.S.S.A.A. will feature a return to winter sports action after the exam break as the Senior boys' hockey league continues with a total of five games over the weekend. Tomorrow night (Friday), Confederation travels to Carmichael to take on the Macdonald Cartier Pantheres at 8:30pm, and the St. Benedict Bears visit the Walden Arena to take on the Lively Hawks, also at 8:30pm. On Saturday, Cambrian Arena will host as the Lasalle Lancers take on the Bears at 6pm, followed by the Hawks against the Lo-Ellen Park Knights at 8pm. The other game on Saturday pits the Espanola Spartans at home against the Notre Dame Alouettes, game time 7:30pm.
