I mentioned it in passing last week, but I have to tell you more about the incredible performances that Sudbury athletes participating at N.O.S.S.A. cross country running posted in Sault Ste. Marie on October 29th.

Normally I wouldn't go back a few weeks like this (especially since there is so much going on right now), but some informal inquiries have revealed that this showing might be the best ever by a Sudbury delegation at N.O.S.S.A. cross country, something worth a second look.

Just look at the divisional results: Midget Girls - 1st place Lo-Ellen, 2nd place Lasalle, Junior Girls - 1st place Lockerby, Senior Girls - 1st place Lo-Ellen, Midget Boys - 1st place Lockerby, Junior Boys - 2nd place Lockerby, Senior Boys - 1st place Lo-Ellen. Overall the picture is even more impressive: 1st place Lockerby, 2nd place Lo-Ellen, 6th place Lasalle.

Individual results are no different: Midget Boys - 1st Dylan Petrin (Lockerby), Junior Boys - 1st Devon Kershaw (Lockerby), 3rd Joseph Yawney (Lockerby), Senior Boys - 2nd Dave Smith (Lo-Ellen), 3rd Dean Waddell (Lo-Ellen), Midget Girls - 1st Tessa Bonhomme (Lasalle), 2nd Katie Johnston (Lo-Ellen), 3rd Melissa Bota (Lo-Ellen), 5th Julie Forbes (Lockerby), Junior Girls - 3rd Sophie Manarin (Lockerby), 3rd Leila Angrand (Notre Dame), Senior Girls - 1st Jen Lavoie (Lasalle), 2nd Kim Bowerman (Lockerby), 3rd Serena Jennings (Lo-Ellen), 4th Liz Forbes (Lockerby), 5th Natalie Lafort (Notre Dame).

Well deserved congratulations are extended to all the Sudbury athletes who pushed themselves to perform their best at N.O.S.S.A. this year, and well deserved congratulations to the coaches who helped show them the way ...

I mentioned there is a lot going on this week and I wasn't kidding. Tonight the Boys' Junior and Senior Division A Volleyball championships are being contested at Cambrian College. Competition has been fierce in Division A this year and the finals are always a blast so the games will not disappoint. Game times are 4pm and 6pm Junior and Senior respectively. A nominal admission fee will be charged.

A winner here will be difficult to predict, but informally predictions seem to point to the Knights as the early favourites in both Junior and Senior competition. It will be very interesting indeed to see how this one works out.

Tommorrow night the Division B Volleyball Championships will be contested at the site of the highest placing Senior surviving team. Game times for these games are 4:00pm and 5:30pm respectively. Participants at time of publication were not known, however both Lasalle Juniors and Seniors will prove tough to beat, posting a combined 13-0 match record while dropping dropping only five games all season long.

Still on Volleyball, what an incredible Final in Midget Boys' competition Monday night. The best-of-five match went the full five games, and the point total combined, if you can believe this, was 110 for Champlain, 102 for Lockerby. You just can't get any closer than that. Thanks to all the players for the best midget boys' volleyball game I ever saw.

To Boys' Hockey, and this weekend is one of the most active on the first half of the schedule. Beginning with Confederation at Lasalle at 4pm this afternoon in the Cambrian arena, a total of seven games will be played through Saturday. The Senior league will play a single round robin until Christmas this year, then split into two divisions in the New Year.

Turning to girls' basketball, tie breakers hosted this week will solidify semi finals next week in Midget, as well as Junior and Senior Division I and II girls' basketball. Midget semis go Monday, Division II semis are on Tuesday, and Division I semis go Wednesday. Championship finals begin Thursday with Division II Junior and Senior, while the Midget and Division I Junior and Senior finals will take place on Saturday, November 20th as a triple header in the Senior highest gym.
