In the first of the 1999 Fall team sports to declare a champion, the nine-team Boys' Junior Soccer loop is quickly drawing to a close, with semis this coming Monday, October 25th and finals the following Thursday, October 28th. Delki Dozzi will be featured site for all playoff games.

Defending Champion College Notre Dame Alouettes are expected to put up a strong challenge to repeat, posting a perfect 8-0 record going into the semi final round. According to the S.D.S.S.A.A. championship records, it would be the first time ever that a team from Notre Dame ever won back to back championships in Boys' Junior Soccer competition.

The battle for second place was decided last night at Queen's Athletic Field, the Cardinals from St. Charles taking to the field against the Vikings from Lockerby, both going into the game with 6-1 records. In a game that will figure to be the prelude to the semi final between these two teams, the Cards came out on top by a final score of 2-0.

The Lasalle Lancers held down a solid fourth spot during regular season play, posting a 5-3 record, including a must-win victory against St. Benedict's on Monday. Final score in this game, Lasalle 7, St. Benedict's 1.

This sets up the semi finals this Monday starting with the Alouettes against the Lancers at 3:30pm followed by the Cards against the Vikings at 5pm. The winners from these games will advance to the championship final on Thursday at 3:30pm.

The playoff champions in Junior Soccer have a lot of time to savour their victory. The N.O.S.S.A. Junior Soccer championship won't be contested until the last weekend in May when the Nipissing District, the only other District in N.O.S.S.A. that has Boys' Junior Soccer, plays their season.

Not that this has had any affect on Sudbury schools' success at these championships -- since 1996/97 when the championship was introduced at this level, no Nipissing District school has ever won. St. Charles won in 1997, followed by Lo-Ellen in 1998 and Notre Dame last year.
