NICKEL RIM INVITATIONAL BASKETBALL

September 24-25 @ Lo-Ellen Park

A stingy defence from St Benedicts Bears led by dimuntive front guard Joanna Fabris and defensive specialist Marcia Topolonski  help them capture their first gold medal at the Nickel Rim 41-29 over the Lo-Ellen Park Knights.The Bears held strong guard Rebecca Johnston off the scroring page for the first half to take a 17 point lead at 30-13 and then held on as the Knights off a few steals put on a spurt in the final quarter but not enough as the Bears held on for a 11 point victory.Centre Kelsey Fielding led the Bears with 10 points on her strong rebounding with teamate Samantha Hechler scoring 9 of her own. Rebecca Johnston led her Knights charges with 10 points to render a total of 53 in the tournament. Samantha Hechler had 41 points in the tournament for the Bears. The rest of the gold medal winning team are as follows:Melissa Demers,Ashli Cormier,Shizucha Portelance,Aureli Ntambwe,Adrianna Pacitto,Chelsea Pressoco,Amy Warnock and Ashleigh Fahey.They were coached by Chantal Olynick.


                       

In the senior division it was Lo-Ellen facing the Mustangs from Manitoulin Secondary. The Mustangs' strong defence held the Knights of Lo-Ellen to just 7 pints in the first half for 18-7 lead and then cruised the rest of the way for 13 point victory 33-20 and the gold medal. Amy Tribineucius led the way for the winners with 12 points while teamate Chris Hitawanakuut chipped in with 11 of her own. Ashley Arnold had 7 points for Lo-Ellen. Other members of the winning teram were Val Stadiuk,Kim Boyer,Kim Bourque,and Angela Wiggini.

In the senior consolation final for the bronze Scollard Hall of Noth Bay defeated ST Benedicts 45-27.
