HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS

With Dave Makela

For Release: September 30th, 1999

I'm sure we can all agree that there is nothing, nothing on this earth as devastating as the premature loss of a loved one or close friend.

With this in mind comes an item from Program Leader Ron Dubuc of Ecole secondaire catholique l'Heritage: "Last Thursday, September 23rd, 1999, the Phoenix Junior Girls' Basketball team played against the Chelmsford Flyers at Ecole secondaire catholique l'Heritage. Pat Drews, a student and our gym manager, was there as usual to set up the chairs, score table, team benches and oversee all the preparations necessary to host a high school basketball game. Our local officials are always impressed with the quality of our minor officials (scorekeepers and timers).

The game is played. After Pat has completed and signed the scoresheet and assured himself that all the equipment is put away, he heads out to the tennis court to play a couple of sets with his friends. Pat collapsed while playing and passed away leaving friends, players, teachers and family in shock and disbelief. Friday was one of the most difficult days that the administration, teachers and students at E.S.C. l'Heritage have ever had to face.

I would like to acknowledge the kind and thoughtful acts of Mr. Tom O'Grady from Elliot Lake Secondary School. Not only did he make us feel at ease about dropping out at the last minute from his girls' basketball tournament, but he also sent a beautiful bouquet of flowers to the grieving students, staff and family. It was without a doubt the only bright moment of my day. It was a thoughtful gesture that epitomizes the spirit of high school sports.

Thanks Pat Drews for being you, our friend, our basketball manager, our gym manager, our sunshine. You are and always will be an important part of our Phoenix teams and our school."

On behalf of the S.D.S.S.A.A. Executive and membership at large we extend our sincere condolences to the Drews family and to all those who knew and loved him.
