>> May 30 - It was a case of close but no cigar for Sudbury schools participating at NOSSA track and field Wednesday and Thursday of this week, with SDSSAA champs Lo-Ellen and runners-up Lockerby finishing in the second and third spot behind Superior Heights of the Soo.

Outstanding individual performances were recorded by individual aggregate winners Karly Hellstrom of Lasalle (midget girls) and Sarah MacLean of Lockerby (senior girls). Some local athletes also established new NOSSA records including Brendan Costello of Lo-Ellen (JB 800m - 2:01.94), Noah Lapierre of Lasalle (JB high jump - 1.85m), Ryan Taylor of Lasalle (JB triple - 12.99m), Danika Falvo of Notre-Dame (JG javelin - 38.20m), Chris Barclay of Lo-Ellen (boys visually impaired 100m and 800m - 13.43 and 2:33.60), Jeannie Rochon of L'Horizon (wheelchair 200m and 400m- 52.79 and 1:52.14, and the Lasalle open girls 4x400 relay team (4:10.93).

>> May 27 - The first ever NOSSA Boys Baseball Championship is successfully in the books, with Bishop A. Carter prevailing to become the North Region representation to the OFSAA Baseball Festival Championships, coming up June 4th and 5th in London and Whitby. The Golden Gators defeated St Charles College 10-2 in the Final and Macdonald Cartier 10-0 in the semis to earn the OFSAA berth.




>> May 27 - Convener Joel Lavallee of Esc Champlain has hammered out a schedule in support of the 2014 SDSSAA Boys SloPitch Championships, slated for Monday, June 2nd in Valley East. A total of sixteen teams have confirmed entry for this year's event, with Collège Notre-Dame attempting to defend their 2013 title.

javpic>> May 22 - UPDATE! In what turned out to be quite a race to the finish, the Lo-Ellen Park Knights prevailed earlier today to win their tenth consecutive overall aggregate track title. The Knights edged out the south end rival Lockerby by over 40 points en route to the title.

A total of ten new records were established during the two day competition, from which the top five qualify for NOSSA to be hosted in the Soo beginning Wednesday, May 28th.

pvpicMay 21 - With day one of the SDSSAA Track and Field Championships in the books, the Lockerby Composite Vikings find themselves with the early lead in the overall point standings. The Vikings, who easily had the largest contingent at the track event this year, recorded a total of 404.5 points, followed closely by defending champs Lo-Ellen at 384.5. Six new records were established earlier today, including two from Lasalle's Ryan Taylor. The action continues tomorrow morning at the Laurentian Community Track.

>> May 15 - The Lively Hawks made history in capturing the 2014 Girls SloPitch Championship yesterday at the Terry Fox field. The Hawks finished 2-1 in their pool, then advanced to the semis to defeat Sacre-Coeur 11-8. In the final, extra innings were required with the Hawks managing an 10-9 win over the L'Horizon Aigles.

>> May 20 - A total of 591 student-athletes representing 16 different area high schools have signed up to take part in the 73rd annual SDSSAA Track and Field Championships, to be hosted Wednesday and Thursday, May 21st and 22nd, at the Laurentian Community Track Complex. Lo-Ellen Park will be gunning for its 10th consecutive overall aggregate championship at this year's event.

>> May 20 - A schedule in support of the first ever SDSSAA/NOSSA baseball championship, to be hosted Monday and Tuesday, May 26-27 has been released by convener Jean Gilles Larocque of Bishop Carter CSS. Six teams, all from Sudbury, will participate in the first event, with the winner to advance to the OFSAA Festival Championship to be hosted June 4th and 5th in London or Whitby.

>> May 15 - The 2014 SDSSAA Tennis Championships wrapped up earlier today at the Sudbury Indoor Tennis Centre, with the Notre-Dame Alouettes managing their second consecutive overall aggregate title. Les Alouettes managed three first place finishes at cities, with Marymount Academy collecting the remaining two.

The top finishers are guaranteed a berth to the NOSSA Tennis Championships hosted at Manitoulin Secondary on May 22nd.

>> May 14 - The Lo-Ellen Park Knights ran to their fourteenth consecutive city relay title earlier this afternoon at the Laurentian Community track, edging south end rival Lockerby by 22 points in the process. The Knights finished with an aggregate point total of 142, followed by Lockerby at 120 and Lasalle rounded out the top three with 51 points. In addition to ten first place finishes, both of the Knight's junior 4x400 teams established new records during the one day competition. The boys team ran a 3:44.41, shaving four seconds off the old mark set by Collège Notre-Dame in 2004, and the girls ran a 4:23.98, just over two seconds faster than the existing mark also set by Lo-Ellen in 2005. Results from the relay meet are used to seed the relay races at next week's SDSSAA track and field championships, taking place Wednesday and Thursday, May 21 and 22 at Lauretian.

>> May 13 - All outdoor events scheduled for SDSSAA Tennis Preliminaries today have been postponed to tomorrow (May 14th) due to weather conditions.

Mixed doubles matches, which were scheduled for the Sudbury Indoor Tennis Centre today, will proceed as scheduled.



>> May 7 - Convener Terry Luoma released the 2014 girls slopitch championship schedule yesterday at the sport's pre-season meeting. A total of 15 teams will grace the draw this year, which will be contested in a single day of competition on Tuesday, May 20th. Should a back up date be required, the event will be moved to Monday, May 26th.

>> May 6 - The Laurentian University Black Fly relays were successfully hosted this past Saturday, with several local athletes serving notice that intend to medal at the upcoming city championships, slated for May 21 and 22.

The next event on the track schedule is the Nipissing Invitational meet, slated for Saturday, May 10th at the new renovated track facility at Northern SS in Sturgeon Falls.

>> May 3 - The St Charles Cardinals dispatched the Marymount Regals in dramatic fashion at the championship final of the Bishop A. Carter Invitaional Girls Soccer Tournament hosted this past weekend, with the Cards prevailing thanks to penalty kicks needed to break the 2-2 stalemate. The Confederation Chargers took the consolation championship thanks to a 4-0 win over the host Bishop Carter Golden Gators.

>> Apr 29 - GAME ON! The city has announced plans to open the James Jerome complex on Wed, Apr 30, so all games scheduled Wed and Thu of this week will proceed as scheduled.

Apr 24 -The start of the 2014 spring soccer season will be delayed for at least two days as James Jerome turf field opening will not take place until then. Games are tentative scheduled to resume on Wed, Apr 30th but further changes may be necessary as the field drains out and can be properly prepped prior to the start of the season. Similarly, start times for games on May 6 and 7 have been adjusted to make way for users anxious to start their seasons.

>> Apr 9 - The medal rush continues for SDSSAA athletes participating at OFSAA Gymnastics in Peterborugh this week. At last count, SDSSAA students had hauled in ten medals, including four gold, three silver and three antique bronze over the duration of the two day event. Here's a brief review:

>> Apr 5 - When the shuttlecocks settled after finals were complete at the SDSSAA badminton championships hosted earlier today at St Benedict CSS, two local schools kept their championship banner streaks alive, with Lockerby hauling in their sixth consecutive overall aggregate title (37 points) and Es du Sacré-Coeur capturing their third annual "A" aggregate banner (31 points). The top two in each event not qualify for the NOSSA championships, to be hosted in the Soo next weekend.

>> Apr 2 - A total of sixty-five gymnasts representing nine different high schools in Sudbury participated at the SDSSAA/NOSSA Gymnastics Championships yesterday at the GymZone Gymnastics Club on Gemmell Street. The top six from each event category will advance to participate the OFSAA championships, slated for April 7th and 8th in Peterborough.

curlb>> Mar 23 - The Marymount Regals sailed through OFSAA Girls Curling unscathed, en route to the first gold medal performance by a SDSSAA school in girls curling since this very same school managed the feat way back in 1981. At this event, Marymount dispatched Centre Dufferin (10-1), Crestwood Prep. College (8-1), Markham DHS (9-7) and St Michael CSS (8-2) in the round robin portion of the draw, then defeated Parry Sound HS (5-3) and Brockville 8-3) in the semis and final respectively. Regals are number one!

Mar 14 - Sudbury's finest high school curlers will take to the ice in search of provincial glory at their respective OFSAA championships following the March break.

curlgThe Lockerby Composite boys will compete in North Bay while the Marymount Academy girls will travel to Brampton.

Both championships will be hosted March 19-22.



ofsahock>> Mar 5 - A total of six SDSSAA hockey teams will be competing at their respective OFSAA Hockey Championships after the break, including the St Charles Cardinals girls and boys, Confederaton boys, Collège Notre-Dame girls, Macdonald Cartier girls and Marymount Academy girls.


ofsabhockThe girls' teams will not have to venture further than their own backyard with OFSAA Girls Hockey hosted locally beginning Tuesday of next week, while the Cardinal boys and Confederation boys are off to Burlington for their events. Here's how they were seeded:
St Charles girls - 5th, Notre-Dame - 11th, Madonald Cartier - 15th, Marymount - 16th
St Charles boys - 12th, Confederation - 19th.

>> Mar 10 - Just prior to the March break, SDSSAA student-athletes, participating at their respective OFSAA championships, managed some very impressive results.

ofsvb14Congratulations to the Lo-Ellen Park Senior girls volleyball team in capturing the Consolation championship at OFSAA Girls AA Volleyball hosted in Thunder Bay just before the March break.

The Knights defeated St. Ignatius in the final 3-2 to finish firmly in the top ten provincially. Way to go Knights!

ofswre14SDSSAA wrestlers competing at OFSAA in Timmins hauled in one first, two fourth and one sixth place finish.

GOLD!: Alannah Day, Lockerby CS (67.5 kg weight class), Fourth: Emilie Charette, Es du Sacre-Coeur (57.5 kg) and Dustin Pretty of Lasalle (54 kg), Sixth: Logan Blanchard of Lo-Ellen (54 kg). Congratulations grapplers - outstanding!

Best local performances were: Lela Hopper, Lively (25th, junior girls), Daniel Tindall, Lockerby (24th junior boys), Stephanie Hunter, Lockerby (77th, senior girls) and Scott Sampson, St Benedict (80th, senior boys).


skier>> Mar 5 - Surprisingly to some, SDSSAA schools manage the coveted NOSSA hockey "sweep", taking all four championships available in convincing fashion. Competing in North Bay, the St Charles College Cardinals boys team nipped the St Mary's Knights 2-1 in the championship final to claim the A/AA banner. Meanwhile in Sudbury, titles were claimed by Confederation boys (9-4 win over Korah in the final), St Charles girls (5-2 win over West Ferris) and Macdonald Cartier girls (3-1 win over Notre-Dame in the final). All four teams now advance to their respective OFSAA championships to be hosted following the March break.

button>> Feb 26 - The Lockerby Composite boys and Marymount Academy girls curling teams join a growing contingent of SDSSAA athletes vying for OFSAA glory next week, with both teams managing impressive NOSSA titles earlier in the week. Interestingly enough, both NOSSA finals were all-Sudbury affairs. The Regals outlastedl Lo-Ellen Park 5-3 in the girls NOSSA final, while Lockerby defeated Notre-Dame in the boys final 10-1. Lockerby now advances to the boys OFSAA finals in North Bay, while Marymount travels to the girls event in Brampton. Both events are slated for March 19--22.

ggator>> Feb 26 - The Bishop Carter Golden Gators solidified their first entry into the girls high school hockey championship records yesterday, sweeping the Sacre-Coeur Griffons 5-1 and 8-0 to win the division II championship. It was the first such title for the school.

>> Feb 25 - The St Charles Cardinals completed the coveted high school hockey sweep yesterday afternoon, with the Lady Cards nipping the College Notre-Dame Alouettes 2-1 in the game two of the best of three final series hosted at the Carmichael Arena. Summer Butterfly, with her second goal of the game, notched the winner with 3:23 remaining in regulation time. Both teams now advance to the NOSSA championships, hosted at the McCrory-Countryside Sports Complex Mar 3 and 4.

>> Feb 24 - Some impressive results are coming from SDSSAA racers competing at the OFSAA Alpine Ski championships going on yesterday and today at Blue Mountain in Collingwood.

>> Feb 24 - The St Charles Cardinals won their third consecutive division I boys hockey playoff title, and fourth over the past five years, by sweeping the Lasalle Lancers last night at the Carmichael Arena. In the nightcap, the Lo-Ellen Park Knights completed a sweep of their own, knocking off the St Benedict Bears to win their second division II title in four years. The Cards now advance to the NOSSA A/AA Boys Championship hosted in North Bay Mar 3-4. The Lancers meanwhile will join Confederation in the locally hosted AAA championship also Mar 3-4.

In a brief awards ceremony conducted last evening, the SDSSAA boys hockey league recognized their top performers during regular season and playoffs.

>> Feb 12 - Close to 120 racers representing thirteen area high schools participated in the SDSSAA/NOSSA Alpine Ski Championships that were hosted earlier today at Adanac Ski Hill. Lockerby captured three of four team aggregate banners up for grabs including boys level I and II and girls level II, while Marymount won the girls level I banner. The top placing level I and II teams overall, along with the top individual not part of those teams qualify for OFSAA, beginning February 24th at Blue Mountain in Collingwood.

>> Feb 10 - A total of 112 student-athletes representing thirteen area high schools have signed up for the SDSSAA/NOSSA Alpine Ski Championship, to take place Wednesday at the Adanac Ski Hill. The top two individual and team finishers in Level One and Two competition will advance to the OFSAA championships at the end of the month in Collingwood. SDSSAA/NOSSA races get underway at 9:30am.

>> Feb 6 - In one of the best turn-outs in recent memory, the SDSSAA Alpine Ski Preliminary races were successfully hosted earlier today at Adanac Ski Hill, featuring a total of 85 racers representing ten area high schools. The races serve as a brief training tool for cities next Wednesday.

>> Feb 6 - The Ron Preston Wrestling City Championships were hosted at St Benedict on Tuesday. Macdonald Cartier won the top team aggregate award while Sudbury Secondary won top honours in girls. Sudbury Secondary was the top combined team aggregate winner. Qualifiers will advance to the NOSSA championships which will be hosted in the Soo on Friday, February 14th.

>> Feb 6 - The SDSSAA nordic ski season drew to a close yesterday with the hosting of the city championships at Laurentian yesterday. A total of 37 racers representing six area high schools participated with Lockerby collecting overall aggregate honours. Qualifiers advance to the NOSSA championships, slated for Wed, Feb 12 in North Bay.

>> Jan 14 - Results from nordic ski preliminary #3 that was hosted yesterday at the Laurentian Trails have been released. The meet included a total of thirty student-racers representing five area high schools. Next meet on the schedule is the city championship, slated for Wednesday, February 5th, 1pm start, on the Laurentian trails.

>> Jan 9 - Results from the wrestling preliminary meet that was hosted yesterday @ Collège Notre-Dame have been released. The link also includes a listing of team aggregate scores. Lasalle finished atop the boys standings with 63 points, while Sudbury Secondary was top dog on the girls' side with 46 points. Next preliminary on the schedule takes place at Es du Sacré-Coeur on Thu, Jan 16th.

>> Jan 7- Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School is poised to host its third annual Knights Invitational Boys Hockey Tournament beginning Thursday, January 30th. The two-day event will include eight teams including Franco-Cité of Sturgeon Falls and Esc Theriault and O'Gorman High School from Timmins.

>> Dec 17 - Recent snow conditions have paved the way for a first nordic ski preliminary to be hosted before the Christmas break. Preliminary number one was hosted at the Windy Lake trails yesterday, involving a total of twenty-seven racers representing six area high schools.

>> Dec 17 - High school hockey coaches gathered last evening to hammer out part two of their regular season schedule which also features playoffs leading up to NOSSA on Mar 3-4. The ten team league will be divided into two five team divisions, completing an inter-divisional round robin to Feb 7. The top four from each division will advance to the semi final round starting the week of February 10th. The St Charles Cardinals currently led the pack with a perfect 9-0 record heading into the break.

wre>> Dec 10 - The SDSSAA Wrestling "Boot" meet was hosted yesterday at Lasalle SS. The overall winner of the meet takes home a well-used "Boot" which is symblomatic of the overall aggregate point leader from this event.

swi>> Dec 10 - The 2013 Swim Championships were contested earlier today at the Laurentian University pool, involving over two hundred student-athletes representing sixteen high schools including Franco-Cite of Sturgeon Falls, Widdifield of North Bay, Elliot Lake SS and Espanola. Lockerby won the overall aggregate banner while Elliot Lake SS took home the "A" overall aggregate title.

fb>> Nov 19 - SDSSAA Senior Boys Football recognized the outstanding performers of the 2013 season at a season-end banquet hosted at Lockerby Composite School yesterday afternoon. Hunter Holub of Lively DSS walked away with the Sid Forster Memorial Most Outstanding Player Award, while Matthew Kuzenko of St Charles was named the league's Most Valuable Player. Adam Ferris, Matt Glass and Sam Sedoare, all from Lo-Ellen Park, were named the Ricker Best Defensive Player, the Bartolucci Best Offensive Player and the Derks Outstanding Lineman respectively.

no>> Nov 18 - We're going' to OFSAA! Two SDSSAA teams will carry Sudbury hopes for provincial gold this coming weekend in girls basketball and boys volleyball.

The Lasalle Lancers will attend the OFSAA Girls "AA" Basketball championships beginning Thursday in Windsor, while the Lockerby Vikings will attend the Boys' "AA" Volleyball championships beginning Thursday in Thunder Bay.

The Lasalle Lancer boys junior volleyball team were the only other SDSSAA school managing to haul in a NOSSA title this weekend, blanking the Widdifield Wildcats in the "AAA" junior final at Lo-Ellen 3-0.


wrestling>> Nov 9th - The first major meet of the wrestling season was hosted Saturday at Macdonald Cartier, involving eighteen schools from across the province.

Marie and Sudbury, will take to the ice for the 34th edition of the Lively District Hockey Invitational Tournament starting Friday, November 15th. In addition to SDSSAA reps Confederation, St Benedict, Lo-Ellen, L'Horizon, St Charles, Lasalle, Bishop Carter and host Lively, White Pines and Central Algoma of the Soo will participate as well. Puck drops 8am at the TM Davies Arena at 8am. Tournament action culminates with championship finals Sunday at 2pm.

>> Oct 28 - The first annual Cardinal Cup Girls Hockey Invitational Hockey tournament will kick off on November 5th at the Garson Arena, featuring eight teams across two divisions. "A" division participants will include Notre-Dame, St Charles, Bishop Carter and Marymount, while the "B" division will include Macdonald Cartier, Lo-Ellen Park, Sacré-Coeur and St Joseph/Scollard Hall of North Bay. Action begins at 8am on Tuesday, November 5th.

>> Oct 25 - In the annual struggle for bragging rights in girls high school hockey, mark one point for the east, represented by Macdonald Cartier, Sacré-Coeur, Lo-Ellen Park, Lasalle and Marymount, who outscored the west, represented by Confederation, Espanola, L'Horizon, St Benedict, Lively and Champlain, by the final score of 33-11. The win erases a five year winning streak by the west, still holding the edge in the overall event record 5-3-2. The annual east/west classic features up to twelve teams each year playing a series of mini-games with scores accumulated to arrive at an overall result. This year's event was hosted at the Garson Arena.

>> Oct 24 - A total of eight top three finishes were recorded by SDSSAA athletes participating at NOSSA XC yesterday in North Bay, including three firsts: Karly Hellstrom (LAS-MG), Alexie Legault (CND-JG) and Brendan Costello (LEP-JB). The best team finish of the day came from the Lockerby boys, finishing first in junior boys team scoring. Lockerby managed the best overall aggregate score amongst Sudbury schools, finishing fourth. Manitoulin SS won the overall aggregate title at this event for the second consecutive year. The top top teams in each age classification, plus the top four individuals not part of qualifying teams, will advance to the OFSAA championship hosted in Sudbury Nov 1-2.

>> Oct 18 - The Lockerby Vikings managed a slim six point victory over south-end rival Lo-Ellen Park en route to their fourth consecutive cross country running title. The Vikings finished with 54 points, followed by Lo-Ellen with 48 and Confederation with 22. Some one hundred runners will compete at NOSSA to be hosted in North Bay on October 23rd.

>> Oct 11 - Girls hockey coaches met on Tuesday night to discuss plans for the upcoming season. A total of sixteen teams have confirmed participation for the 2013-2014 season, up two teams from last year. This year, teams have the right to choose the division in which they wish to play, and preliminary indications point to an even 8+8 division alignment.

>> Oct 9 - Lockerby may have won its second XC relay overall aggregate title in three years yesterday, but it was by the slimmest of margins over its sound end rival Lo-Ellen. Just two points separated the two at the end of the day, followed by Confederation, Marymount and Sacré-Coeur. The relays set the stage for the city championships, slated for Thursday, October 17th, 11am start on the Laurentian trails.

>> Oct 7 - Senior boys hockey coaches have established an exhibition schedule to open the 2013-2014 school season. Eight of eleven schools will participate in the four week schedule, including Bishop Carter, Confederation, L'Horizon, Lasalle, Lockerby, Macdonald Cartier, Manitoulin and St Charles. Opting out of this year's exhibition loop will be Lively, Lo-Ellen and St Benedict, rounding out an eleven team entry in the senior boys hockey circuit this season.

>> Oct 3 - SDSSAA Cross Country Prelim #3 was hosted yesterday on the Windy Lake trails under near perfect conditions. Next event on the cross country calendar will be the relay championships, slated for Thursday, October 9th at Laurentian.

>> Sep 27 - The Lockerby boys team of Nick Quesnel, Jason Picco, Jake Santi, Ward Kyle and Ryan Allick finished atop the team standings at NOSSA Golf, hosted yesterday at the Lively Golf and Country Club. The Vikings finished with an aggregate score of 296 strokes, 22 better than their next competitor, Elliot Lake Secondary School. In addition, Viking Quesnel won the boys individual title, scoring a 68, while classmate Lauren Kyle finished with a 97 to take the girls individual scoring title.

>> Sep 17 - Convener Kent Rendell of Sudbury Secondary School has released a start list in support of the SDSSAA Golf Championships slated for Thu, Sep 19 @ the Lively Golf and Country Club. A total of 91 students representing sixteen area high schools will participate in this year's event. Qualifiers participate at the NOSSA championship to be hosted Thu, Sep 26th, also at the Lively course.

>> Sep 13 - The first cross country preliminary race of the season, the Lockerby Road Race, was hosted yesterday around this south-end high school. This first race represents the first step towards qualifying for OFSAA to be hosted at the Laurentian Trails on November 2nd. The second preliminary race of the season goes Tuesday, September 17th, 3pm start at Fielding Park.

>> Sep 13 - Fall sport pre-season meetings were successfully hosted on Wednesday evening at Lasalle in support of girls basketball, boys volleyball, boys junior soccer, girls flag football and boys and girls golf.

>> Aug 30 - At their pre-season coaches' meeting hosted Monday night, SDSSAA football coaches hammered out a regular season and playoff schedule for the 2013 season. The 2013 football schedule features the return of junior for the first time since 1984. The senior season opener goes Sep 12th, while the first junior game is slated for Sep 26th.

>> Jun 26 - The Greater Sudbury Board of Basketball Officials is pleased to announce a training clinic for potential and present officials on Friday, September 6th and Saturday, September 7th. This clinic can lead to certification for basketball officiating at all levels in Ontario. There will be in class and on court sessions with a French language component included.
